Neutrogena Self Tanner Review

For those of us who don’t want to say goodbye to summer just yet, and every person who struggles to get a decent tan on even the sunniest days, there is Neutrogena Micromist Airbrush Sunless Tan spray.

I will break down the features and flaws of this can of sunshine in this Neutrogena Self Tanner Review.

Neutrogena Self Tanner Review

As much as I love Autumn and all of it’s layered, cozy, fashion glory – have to admit that I am a summer girl at heart.

I’m always sad to see the warm rays leave, and do everything in my power to make my luminously tanned skin stay as long as possible. But, I haven’t quite mastered that superpower yet.

This led me on a search for the best self-tanner – so that as the dark, cold days of winter approach, I can still look like I just vacationed in the Maldives.

Out of all the self-tanners I tried, I have to say that Neutrogena’s Micromist Sunless Tanning Spray was the most consistent, reliable, and easiest to apply.

When it comes to overall quality, price, and downsides, you’ll have to keep reading my Neutrogena Self Tanner Review.

Neutrogena Self Tanner

Neutrogena stands by its commitment to sustainability by having a high standard for its ingredients, sourcing, and packaging.

The company’s vision for maintaining safety for its customers means consciously choosing to avoid unnecessary and harmful ingredients so that you are never compromising your skin’s health.

Any girl who has played around with self tanning lotions and sprays in the past knows just how hard it is to find a product that is high in quality and still won’t leave unwanted residue on your hands and clothes.

With its goals for beautiful, healthy skincare products and sustainability initiatives, Neutrogena has claimed its spot at the #1 leader in sun care and protection. Now this is a brand I can get behind!

Neutrogena Self Tanner Review

Who is This Product For?

At-home self tanning products have become increasingly popular over the last decade.

With skin cancer percentages on the rise, cosmetics brands have been held accountable in offering safe solutions and products that consumers can count on.

The result is sunless tanning sprays and lotions that give you the glow of the sun with none of the risk.

This product is for anyone:

  • Who burns or doesn’t tan easily.
  • Has an event coming up that they want to look their best for.
  • Can’t afford a professional spray tanning session.
  • It doesn’t have the time to lay out to catch some natural rays.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this particular product for those who are new to the spray tanning game. Trust me; it takes a dozen bottles and practice to get it right.

The first few times, you are guaranteed to miss a few spots and see some streaking.

The application of the Micromist Airbrush Sunless Tan was messy to say the least. While the stream was consistent and light coming out of the can, the product still sprayed on my mirrors, counter-top, and floor.

Thankfully, any seasoned vet like myself knows to lay a sheet on the floor before attempting to use any tanning solution.

What’s Included?

The packaging for this product is minimal and has nothing else to offer but the can itself. The can is 5.3 ounces and is designed with an ultra-fine mist similar to a professional airbrush spray. You can use one continuous touch as you apply the mist and you don’t have to rub the solution into your skin.

Overview of Features

This Neutrogena Self Tanner Review is a little different from the other products I’ve reviewed in the past. The package only includes the can and the features are simple, as the product is fairly self-explanatory.

One of the greatest benefits of this at-home tanning spray is that it’s supposed to dry quickly. It’s advertised on Neutrogena’s website to completely dry in less than five minutes.

However, it was almost an hour before I was no longer sticky.

Another really great feature is the formula. Most self-tanners that I’ve tried have been greasy, uneven, and take forever to tint my skin.

This one literally makes your skin three shades darker – Finally! A tanner that lives up to it’s marketing! This means that if you have fair or pale skin, you should definitely refrain from overdoing it and go with the Medium Tint option.

Finally, let’s talk about the ingredients! I can’t lie, I’m still learning about which chemicals are safe to use and which ones should honestly be illegal in this country. BUT, I have to say that Neutrogena takes its sustainability and safety promises seriously.

Neutrogena’s Micromist Airbrush Sunless Tan is oil-free and won’t clog your pores. It also contains witch hazel, which has soothing properties, can shrink your pores, reduce skin irritation, and protects against skin damage.

How to Use Neutrogena Self Tanner

If you are new at this, then please save yourself the headache and orange-y mess by heeding the following instructions.

1. Whatever you do, do not spray any tanning spray onto your face.

First of all, most people tend to have oily faces. Your natural oils act as a barrier against tanning sprays. So, you need to wash and very lightly exfoliate your face before putting on tanning solutions.

After cleansing and exfoliating, apply moisturizer, as it will help with making the tan look more natural.

Next, hold the can upwards so that the spray falls down onto your face, keeping at least eight inches away from your face. Or, spray the mist directly into your hands and apply with your fingers.

Focus more on the areas where the sun naturally hits: forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin.

2. Before using the spray on your body, take a shower and cleanse and exfoliate your skin. This ensures that you won’t see streaks and that the tan will last longer.

3. Although you might be worried about the mist not reaching every body part or missing key areas, it’s really easy to overdo it.

Hold the spray can six inches away from your body and sweep the coating evenly across the area you’re spraying for an even application.

Stop spraying at the end of each stroke and avoid over-spraying your elbows, knees, wrists, and ankles.

4. Always, always wash your hands with soap and water after using any at-home tanning products. Otherwise, you’re going to be walking around with orange hands for the next few days.

Alternatives to Neutrogena Self Tanner

Although this is a Neutrogena Self Tanner review, I have to shout out to other amazing tanners out there. When you can’t afford professional spray tans, you have to know all of your options.

And considering how many self-tanners are out there, I doubt that the Micromist Airbrush Sunless Tan is the be-all and end-all of at-home glows.

Fake Bake Flawless Self Tan Liquid

Ringing in at $27.00 on Amazon, Fake Bake is a fast and affordable self-tanner. It has over four thousand reviews worldwide, and most of them are above 4 stars.

Fake Bake Flawless Self Tan Liquid is arguably one of the best on the market, and this particular package comes with an application glove to help spread the solution.

It dries within minutes and comes out as a golden brown instead of burnt orange.

The most notable reference to the brand’s quality is how little it takes to spray your entire body. The bottle is only 4.2 ounces, but it takes maybe less than one ounce to completely cover every inch of skin.

The tan itself lasts almost seven days, literally almost twice as long as any other self-tanner.

Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun Body Mousse

Jergens mousse formula is so different from your typical lotion or spray. The airy tanning mousse is designed to enhance your natural skin tone so that your tan is gradual and natural-looking.

The mousse itself is slightly tinted, so you can actually see where you’ve applied it. This means precise and even coverage that dries within a few minutes.

I definitely recommend this tanner for beginners because it’s so easy to apply and customize your color. The mousse develops your natural skin tone, so you are glowing after just one use.

But, if you prefer a darker color, then you can reapply the solution the next day,, and you’ll see the results you want.

Lastly, Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun Body Mousse is beautifully scented. It’s fruity, tropical, and oh-so-delicious.

Neutrogena Self Tanner Review: The Final Verdict

Overall, I give the Neutrogena Micromist Airbrush Sunless Tan Spray a solid 4 Stars – based on my own experience and the hundreds of reviews I read on Amazon and Neutrogena’s website.

I loved the final color I got with this spray tan, but didn’t love the mess it made in my bathroom! Even with a make-shift tarp down, it still sprayed everywhere.

While the mess isn’t a deal-breaker, it was still an unnecessary inconvenience.

For the affordable price, convenient availability (you can find it in almost every store and online), and amazing color, I would say that it’s worth your time and money.
